This long-awaited international court does not dispense justice - it lets off the worst African satraps and instead, aims its arrows at the USA and Israel.
An exceptional defendant just appeared before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, the UN court that deals with disputes between states. In the “Peace Palace”, built with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie and decorated with the symbols of 46 nations (the clock tower comes from Switzerland).
Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, appeared in court to face the charges of "genocide" perpetrated by her country Burma against Rohingya's Muslims.
Gambia dragged her to the Hague on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which includes countries such as Iran, which has just killed 1.500 of its citizens in the repression of anti-regime protests; Mauritania, which still has human slavery; Saudi Arabia, which whips dissidents in the streets and butchers journalists in foreign consulates; Erdogan's Turkey, which has just practiced large-scale ethnic cleansing of Kurds in Syrian Rojava; and Sudan's Omar Bashir, to name just a few.
In the same hours during which Aung San Suu Kyi entered that Court of Justice, not far away, in the International Criminal Court, US soldiers engaged in the Afghan war for seventeen years risked being dragged through that court.
Last January, the Criminal Court even acquitted former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo of "crimes against humanity" related to the violence that followed the elections in 2010 and which caused the death of three thousand people. His acquittal follows the end of the proceedings against Kenya's vice president William Ruto and a previous court's decision to drop the charges against Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, also related to post-election violence.
Now the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Fatou Bensouda, dropped a legal bombshell by announcing her intention to launch an investigation into alleged war crimes committed in the "Palestinian territories." Israel, not its tyrannical and bloodthirsty neighbors, risks being dragged in front of the Court for defending itself against Jihadism and for building homes in the Jews' historical biblical homeland, recaptured in a defensive war.
These Hague courts were born with the noblest and the best of intentions. They are now helpless in judging the worst African satraps but stage shameful Orwellian trials against the American and Israeli democracies defending themselves from terrorism. Transnational justice has been turned into a farce and a disgrace.
Giulio Meotti, an Italian journalist with Il Foglio, writes a twice-weekly column for Arutz Sheva. He is the author of the book "A New Shoah", that researched the personal stories of Israel's terror victims, published by Encounter and of "J'Accuse: the Vatican Against Israel" published by Mantua Books.. His writing has appeared in publications, such as the Wall Street Journal, Frontpage and Commentary.
