Harvard University President Alan Garber said that the suggestion that Harvard was open to paying $500 million is “false,” claiming that the number was apparently leaked to the press by White House officials
Harvard University President Alan Garber is purportedly not considering a $500 million settlement with the Trump administration, contrary to a recent news report purporting the Ivy School was making such a consideration to end its policy dispute with the Trump administration.
Garber said that Harvard is seriously considering resolving the civil rights lawsuit with the administration through the courts, rather than a negotiated settlement, according to three faculty members familiar with the matter, The Harvard Crimson reported Monday.
The prestigious school and the White House restarted negotiations in June in an effort to unfreeze billions of dollars in federal research funding.
Last week, The New York Times reported that Harvard was considering a $500 settlement. Harvard is facing allegations of antisemitism and racial discrimination.
Garber told a faculty member that the suggestion that Harvard was open to paying $500 million is “false,” claiming that the number was apparently leaked to the press by White House officials.
A spokesperson for the Times said that the paper stands by the accuracy of its reporting. The Crimson reported last month that the Trump administration was seeking a large financial settlement.
Faculty said that negotiations between Harvard and the administration have been “on and off again.”
Garber reportedly said that Harvard in any such talks sees academic freedom as nonnegotiable.
University officials have said that appointing an outside monitor to oversee an agreement could be a red line, according to the Times, which reported that Harvard was also reluctant to agree to a financial settlement.
While Garber implied that a deal is not certain, the situation could quickly change, as other Ivy League schools quickly came to settlements with the administration.
While initially declining to comment, a Harvard spokesperson later disputed the characterization of Garber’s remarks after publication.
