An investigation by the British tabloid Daily
Mail revealed yet again on Sunday how British tax-funded foreign aid
supports anti-Israel incitement in Palestinian schools. According to the
report, over 25 million pounds ($31 million) go to Palestinian schools
named after terrorists and murderers.
"Britain is pumping huge sums of foreign aid
into Palestinian schools named after mass murderers and Islamist
militants, which openly promote terrorism and encourage pupils to see
child killers as role models," journalist Ian Birrell reported.
The investigation found 24 Palestinian schools
named after Palestinian terrorists, with four even being named after
one of the Munich massacre planners, where 11 Israeli athletes were
murdered. One school is named after Grand Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini,
who supported Adolf Hitler and helped him recruit for the Waffen-SS. In
some schools, posters are hung on school walls with the word "shahid"
(martyr) next to pictures of terrorists and slogans supporting violence.
The investigation also revealed that school
sporting events are named after terrorists and students often perform
plays featuring scenes in which they shoot at Israelis. In at least one
instance, a Palestinian boy "executed" an Israeli soldier in a play, and
pictures of the scene were uploaded to the school's Facebook page. The
Palestinian Education Ministry also plants trees in memory of
terrorists.
According to the paper, "Head teachers openly
admit flouting attempts by British and European donors to control the
curriculum at schools. They print overtly political study aids for
pupils, some even denying the existence of Israel, and teachers boast of
encouraging pupils to emulate teenage attackers killed in the most
recent wave of terrorist attacks in the region."
A previous investigation by the paper caused
an uproar after revealing how British taxpayers in effect funded part of
the monthly paychecks to convicted terrorists and families of suicide
bombers. In an attempt to prevent ill use of aid money, the British
government decided several months ago to freeze part of the aid package
it sends Palestinians.
The paper claims the U.K. funds a tenth of the
foreign aid package the EU sends the Palestinian Authority, comprising
272 million pounds ($332 million). Birrell wrote that because of
pressure by donors in the West, Palestinian schools were ordered to
remove violent material from their curriculum, including verses from the
Quran calling for jihad, but the teachers admitted to ignoring these
guidelines.
The investigation made us of information gathered by
Palestinian Media Watch, a watchdog website that follows Palestinian
media. Teachers and administrators in various Palestinian schools were
also interviewed as part of the investigation.
