"Be careful what you wish," Musk wrote as millions weighed in.
In a shock move, Elon Musk polled Twitter users Sunday on whether he should resign as Twitter's chief executive, vowing to abide by the results.
By Sunday evening, 58% of the 4 million users who voted urged Musk to step down while 42% said he should stay on as CEO.
"As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it," Musk tweeted as the results poured in.
Musk launched the poll after a controversy over Twitter's decision to ban accounts that link to and promote other social media platforms, such as Truth Social, Facebook and Instagram.
"Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll," Musk tweeted.
