Anthropic and the Rise of Woke AI - Bernice Harvey

by Bernice Harvey

America cannot win the AI race by handing the future to woke monopolists using “safety” rhetoric to rig markets, crush competition, and protect power.

Woke AI is the worst AI, with blue-state politics and ideological bias as its source code. Take, for example, Anthropic, whose executives include senior Biden-era officials and the former head of Sleepy Joe’s AI Safety Institute. No wonder the company opposes President Trump’s executive orders to create a national framework for AI leadership. The company also opposes Trump’s effort to eliminate onerous and prejudicial state laws that have nothing to do with AI safety. That policy alignment is not accidental, particularly when it comes to Anthropic’s attempt to sell “safety” tools to the Pentagon.

Bear in mind, too, that Anthropic was seeded by effective altruism (EA) money, courtesy of Facebook cofounder Dustin Moskovitz and Sam Bankman-Fried’s Alameda Research, and wrapped in EA rhetoric about “long-term” humanity. Its political network tilts hard left, its CEO despises Trump, its cofounder mocks Catholics, and its policy shop is a think tank for brain-dead hacks who oppose Trump’s agenda.

The clearest, and most consequential, break comes in the shape of export controls on chips. President Trump decided in late 2025 to allow Nvidia’s H200 chips to be sold to approved customers in China under conditions that send significant revenues back to the U.S. while preserving national security safeguards. This marked a shift away from blanket Biden-era lockdowns and toward leverage and oversight.

Anthropic opposes this change, which is ironic given the fact that CEO Dario Amodei worked at Baidu’s AI lab, developing Deep Speech 2 for Chinese markets. From late 2014 to late 2015, he helped refine architectures that improved Baidu’s speech recognition capabilities, directly contributing to a Chinese tech champion’s AI stack before moving on to Google and OpenAI. Now he engages in fearmongering, publishing essays about AI-driven extinction scenarios and “mirror life organisms” crowding out all life on Earth, even as his own company races to build those systems. Amodei is also a political hack, aligning with Democrat “safety” advocates who want to stymie competition and monopolize power.

The more realistic scenario is the one Amodei ignores, as it runs counter to his and Anthropic’s interests. If export controls cap global demand for AI hardware and depress prices for chips, firms with the right policy alignment and access could secure scarce computing power at preferential rates. That is exactly Anthropic’s business model. By warning that these chips are too dangerous to sell abroad, this AI “safety” lab seeks to manipulate prices and procure computing power at artificially low rates. Regulatory capture of this kind, based on Democrat connections, is anticompetitive in the extreme.

All of this comes as Anthropic is eyeing a public offering. Its mix of left-wing ideology, dubious leadership, alarmist rhetoric, and bad faith economics should concern investors as much as it does policymakers. We have plenty of warnings—WeWork, Peloton, C3.ai, and others—that turned civilizational narratives into valuation, only to crater when markets demanded fundamentals. We do not need, and cannot afford, a repeat of these disasters, least of all from the likes of Amodei and his band of Biden retreads.

President Trump has said America must win the AI race, with the U.S. tech stack, not Beijing, powering the future. If, on the other hand, woke AI triumphs over common sense, American investors and consumers will go broke. Such an outcome would come at the expense of U.S. strategic dominance and technological innovation. We must put America first and pursue an America First AI policy, in keeping with our immediate and long-term interests.
